I’m talking about Luna & Larry’s Coconut Bliss. The first time I heard about this product was at my friend’s birthday party about two months ago. A bunch of us were out for Chinese food and when it was time to go home, one of the gals flashed me a guilty smile, raised her eyebrows, tensed up her throat and whispered “Coconut Bliss time!” I was like “What the hell is that and why are you making that face?”

She proceeded to tell me about the most awesome non-dairy, non-soy ice cream that she had been indulging in every night while watching some vampire show. I’ve never been an eat-ice-cream-out-of-the-carton-in-front-of-the-tv kind of person so I didn’t think too much of it. But after hearing about this product from nutritionists, friends and nutritionist friends like Amy Bondar, I was intrigued. So the next time I was at Community Natural Foods, I casually stalked the freezer section. I spotted the teeny tiny carton of ice cream that looked like it was made for trolls and experienced a big wave of sticker shock come right over me and nearly knock me down. $9. Holy crap. What the hell is in this stuff?

Four ingredients: Coconut milk, agave, vanilla and dark chocolate.

That right there sold me. Anything with so few ingredients and so many advocates has me by the taste buds. So I justified the purchase by telling myself I would gift it to my lactose-intolerant husband, forgetting completely he doesn’t eat cold foods. Oh well, more for me…Or maybe not. After just one taste, we were both in deep.

But see that’s the thing about brands that trigger prestige. They are superb in quality and excessive in price. They make you feel like part of an elite every time you indulge in it. In fact, now I just call the stuff “the $9 ice cream.” But for a bit of nightly bliss, I think that’s a small price to pay.

Have you tried the coconut bliss bars? The chocolate ones are like fudgsicles but way, way better.

No, I haven’t. I’m so in love with the ice cream I haven’t even tried anything but the flavour I first purchased. I’m a big fan of the fudgsicle though, so I might need to dish out the cash to experience them.

  2. I’m intrigued. Does it taste “coconut-y”? I really don’t care for coconuts, but I do love ice cream in all it’s crazy forms. Dilemma?

Hey Rhett, I don’t think it tastes too “coconut-y,” though it doesn’t taste like your average ice cream either. Try it. Do it.

  3. Hi Sona,
I’m thrilled to hear that you heard about us from so many wonderful sources! It always makes my day to see people spreading the word about Coconut Bliss.
I knew we were a little more expensive in Canada but that is the highest I’ve heard yet-I agree that we’re totally worth it but I might be a little biased :)
You’ll love the bars, they are the exact same formula that goes into the pints, just on a stick.
    Blissful Regards,
    Kiley

Start with chocolate with the bars. The “naked coconut” are nice because there’s actual coconut in there and not just milk, but I like the chocolate best. I think dollar for dollar you probably get more with the bars. Now I want one :)
